Doctor

ANDY SWANSON

Dr. Andy Swanson graduated in 2005 from the National University of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where he completed requirements for licensure as a Naturopathic physician and Classical Chinese doctor.  He has explored first hand how other cultures perceive medicine and the human body.  His current practice weaves these global perspectives into a medical model grounded in a complete understanding of anatomy, physiology, and the diagnosis and treatment of disease.  This includes the use of diagnostic labs and imaging when necessary.

He brings a deep understanding of the Chinese culture, enhanced through travel in China and years of study in the ancient Chinese tradition of Qi Gong.  Similar to Tai Chi, the movements of Qi Gong are designed to balance the body, mind, and spirit to enhance energy and compassion for life.  These perspectives shape Dr. Swanson’s approach with patients.

Working with Andy

A typical visit with Dr. Swanson will involve a full naturopathic medical assessment followed by a comprehensive treatment plan designed to restore balance to all systems of the body.  He honors that the health of the physical body is greatly impacted by the integration of held emotions and operating belief systems.  Both affect the movement of energy throughout the organ systems, and when regulated, promote health and wellness.  Dr. Swanson is trained in the use of acupuncture, qi gong and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) as ways of assisting in the healing process.  These methods are often woven into the treatment plan.

Dr. Swanson offers a unique specialty in IV Nutritional Therapy.  IV therapy allows the practitioner to transport nutrients into the body that may otherwise be hindered due to malabsorption, poor digestion and other maladies.  Through this creative process, nutrient deficiencies are restored and patients often experience relatively quick turnarounds with otherwise hard-to-treat conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, gallbladder and liver disease.  It is also a supportive therapy for those suffering from cancer, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disease, hepatitis, neurological conditions, and mental health issues, such as addiction, anxiety and depression.  IV ingredients are formulated using traditional recipes designed for specific conditions, modifying nutrients to meet the individual needs of the patient.

Sports medicine and chronic pain is another sub-specialty of Dr. Swanson. He addresses pain and dysfunction following motor vehicle accidents, sports-related injuries, osteoarthritis, disc herniation, carpal tunnel, tendonitis, and plantar fasciitis.  He seeks to address local areas of injury and/or joint dysfunction with acupuncture, hands-on body work, shiatsu, cupping, spinal adjustments, and/or injection therapies. He is trained in a diverse array of injection therapies, including prolotherapy, neural therapy, PRP, and prolozone therapy.  In many cases, these techniques can reduce scarring, inflammation, pain, and improve range of motion. These modalities offer an alternative option to surgery, and are often considered following a thorough examination to understand the root cause, diagnosis, and staging.  Imaging techniques (Xray, MRI, and Ultrasound) are a helpful tool to guide the course of therapy.

Dr. Swanson offers a unique approach to the treatment of brain and nervous system disorders. Born out of his personal battle with post-viral myelitis at age 23, he has developed practical ways to heal conditions such as concussions, TBI, stroke, anxiety, insomnia, migraines, and other nervous system related disorders.  He integrates cutting edge theories of the brain with traditional medical approaches designed to optimize nervous system recovery.  He writes and lectures on various medical topics, and is a contributing author to The Concussion Repair Manual, by Dan Engle, MD.

To add to Dr. Swanson’s multicultural approach, he is familiar with the traditions of Yaqui herbal medicine, which he learned during his apprenticeship with a native American elder in Mexico.  He honors his relationship with medicinal plants and their important role in the healing process.

Dr. Swanson is fluent in Spanish, and accepts patients that speak Spanish and/or English.
